We are proud stewards of the Chantecler—Canada's only true heritage chicken breed.

Developed in the early 1900s by Brother Wilfrid Châtelain at the Oka Agricultural Institute in Quebec, the Chantecler was purposefully created to thrive in the harsh realities of the Canadian climate. With their small cushion combs, minimal wattles, dense feathering, and exceptional cold hardiness, they remain one of the finest all-purpose breeds ever developed for northern homesteads.

The Chantecler is a true dual-purpose breed, valued for both its dependable egg production and quality table characteristics. Hens are known to lay well through the winter months when many other breeds slow down, producing large cream to brown eggs while maintaining a calm and practical temperament. Their hardiness, efficiency, and ability to forage make them a natural fit for sustainable farms and homesteads.

Today, the Chantecler is listed on the Conservation Priority List "Watch" category maintained by The Livestock Conservancy, meaning the breed remains at risk and requires the ongoing support of dedicated breeders and enthusiasts to secure its future.
