Marans are one of the more curious, docile and friendly natured chickens you could have. They do well in a mixed flock and free range almost exclusively in the warmer months. We have roosters which free range with yard access and they are always well behaved and great with our kids ranging from toddler to teen, as well as our pets. We are yet to experience an aggressive rooster from our Marans lines.
We have sourced our Black and Blue Copper Marans from 4 breeders across North America to ensure genetic diversity within our breeding stock.
We have Blue/Black/Splash Copper bloodlines and straight Black Copper bloodlines. For Straight Black Copper Marans please see the Black Copper Marans order page. Our BBS line is carrying recessive white, This means hatching a white chick is possible.
We have two Black Copper Marans lines, our one line produces males which are quicker to mature and have better breast fleshing.
Our other Black Copper Line is out of an exhibition line and produce a mix of males, some are slow to mature and others are quick to mature. Both the slow maturing and quick maturing cockerels set a nice deep copper colour for both hackle and saddle feathers. Females out of our exhibition line have deep copper coloured hackles and keep this colour well into their third year and begin to show more ground colour molting into their fourth year.
Keep in mind when purchasing Marans hatching eggs that eggs will be lighter in colour later in the season. Some hens begin laying over the winter and will be producing a slightly lighter shade of egg in the spring. Our hens on average produce a 6/7 on the egg shade card and we have a few hens which lay a nice 8. Egg shades will vary as a result of the season and line.
The Black Copper Marans (2011) Are recognized By the American Poultry Association and fall under the "Continental Class" of Poultry.
